For various reasons a couple may need to have a marriage ceremony, just with the family or a few friends where they are not able to have the celebrations of their choice on their wedding day. In such cases the couple can hold a reception on a later date. By law they cannot repeat the marriage vows again, but they can renew their vows in front of family and friends. It is also called re-affirmation or renewal of vows.
I have had renewal ceremonies complete with re-affirmation, rings, and even signing a certificate of affirmation, cutting the cake and speeches and all the usual celebrations at the reception that followed.
Renewal of vows is popular with students living in Australia who wished to marry quickly while their parents are visiting them but are unable to organise a reception quickly. They organise a reception later and renew their vows in front of a larger gathering of friends and family.
It is also popular with people requiring a marriage certificate (for visa purposes) before the planned date of reception for going overseas immediately after the reception and therefore cannot wait to marry until the planned wedding reception date. Renewal of vows is suitable for couples at any stage of their marriage; for example at wedding anniversary dates or after a couple has been through a difficult period in their lives.
